Usually the first day of a small class, the professor will make you go around the room to introduce yourself. You have to say your name, year, major, where you are from, and something many people wouldn’t know about you. This was always the scariest part. While everyone else is going, all you are thinking is “What’s cool enough about me that will interest these people but not too crazy that they won’t want to be in my group??” And you are so distracted by this question you realize it’s your turn and everyone is staring at you. SHIT.

“Oh hi!” (Did that sound weird, oh gosh, they think I’m weird.) “I’m Alex…a forth year majoring in Business with a Marketing specialization.” (I have since graduated – and chose marketing because I am “CREATIVE” but slowly realized how un-creative the world of Business really is.) “I’m from a place wedged up between Toledo and a great lake, and, um…something you don’t know…um. I’m left handed.” Why I always resorted to my “lefty-ness” is beyond me. Perhaps because studies suggest only 10% of the world’s population is left handed and I was so luckily brought into this unique circle. So I silently pray that I am unique in a million other ways as well. You can be the judge of that.

I live in New York City. Yup, that’s the one. I didn’t always dream of living here. Actually, Oprah told me that kids who put pictures up in their room of what they want in life are 40% more likely to get it (or something like that). Since I was probably ten when I saw this episode, I ran to my room and hung 4 very important pictures on my wall. They stayed there until graduation. Here they are:

Marina City, Chicago | theshellhammer

Vail, Colorado

I wanted to go to Ohio State, move to Chicago for a career that would lead to me starting my own business in southern California and retire in the Colorado Rockies. Chicago was my dream. I wanted Lake Michigan in my backyard, cold beers on my porch and a view of the sail boats. I was even open to the blistering winds and the bone chilling winters. So, why, you may ask, did I end up in New York? I met a boy in college…

That’s Josh. I don’t regret living here but you should know it wasn’t some captivating love story that will blow you away. It was simply knowing that without being close to him, life really wasn’t worth it. And after 2 years of distance and long working hours, I made the move to this place called Manhattan. The craziest, most entertaining, and most wonderful place I will ever be.

A few things you should note: I love food, meeting new people, and playing sports. My world revolves around only a few things: God, my family (friends are family), country music, planning events and Ohio State. I strongly dislike anything to do with potatoes and ice cream. My goal of writing is to teach you a little bit about New York from a {New} Yorkers perspective. And also to grow and learn as much as I can about this city and myself while I am here. Welcome to New York City!
