Earth Day!

April 22, 2014

It’s Earth Day! I love that when I walked out of my apartment this morning, my deep breath was filled with spring, flowers had appeared on our trees over night and the air was perfectly crisp, with the momentum to be a mild, calming day. It felt like Earth Day, the the world was celebrating itself with a little mild party, preparing itself for the warmth ahead. (At least here in the northern hemisphere.)

Lately, taking care of Earth has been on my mind. After a discussion on the ramifications of our generation and generations before us actions on the Earth, I wish there was one specific thing we could all change right now to make our home more healthy. I wish we could cleanse it; start over. But the truth is, even after all of our beating and pollution, this place still amazes all of us. And there are millions of small things we could be doing to celebrate its beauty and give back. Here are just a few, if you’d like to try today…

+Plant a tree. Did you know… over a 50-year lifetime, a tree generates $31,250 worth of oxygen, provides $62,000 worth of air pollution control, recycles $37,500 worth of water, and controls $31,250 worth of soil erosion?

+Print double-sided. If you are reading this from a desk, this is something you can do on a daily basis by clicking one button.

+GardenEven in the heart of the city.

+Eat more vegetables. Reducing meat consumption conserves fresh water, saves topsoil and even reduces air pollution.

+Walk, hike and bike. I am blessed to live in a city where I walk everywhere, but in the suburbs and country, biking to run errands is a great way to love your planet.

+#LitteratiSee trash, take a picture, post to Instagram and hashtag litterati… then throw it away.

+Reduce, reuse and recycle. Truly, truly, truly. Everyone should be doing this. (And less buy a nice water bottle to fill up daily instead of plastic bottles.)

So, what will you do today to make a small yet genuine impact on that little thing called Earth?

{PS… I’ve been watching a lot of Comos!}
