5 Chefs, 5 Pigs…
Can we just chat about how awesome this event sounds?
Cochon555, a traveling culinary competition (and tasting!), is celebrating its 5 year anniversary by theming their event “5 Chefs, 5 Pigs, 5 Winemakers”. Cochon555 was created to encourage sustainable farming around the nation by challenging local chefs in each city to create a menu, in its entirety, of pig (nose-to-tail). The rockstar chefs will then be judged by 20 “culinary luminaries” and 400 taste testers. The winner will be deemed “Princess of Porc” and move on to compete at the Grand Cochon event at FOOD & WINE Classic in Aspen in June.
This year, the New York competition will be featuring two of my favorite chefs, Alex Guarnaschelli of Butter (winner of The Next Iron Chef: Redemption, judge on Chopped and host of Alex’s Day Off, if you watch The Food Network) and Shanna Pacifico of Back Forty West. Another appeal of the event is learning from new chefs that maybe you have not tried yet – Leah Cohen of Pig and Khao, Missy Robbins of A Voce (which I’ve heard is amazing), and Elizabeth Falkner of Krescendo. (Psst.. Isn’t it awesome that the NYC event features all women chefs!)
If you attend, you also get butcher demonstrations, a Cheese Bar, pork tastings, Anchor Brewing Brews, “pork-spiked desserts”…
The Huffington Post refers to the event as the “…Pork Olympics…” and Forbes, sarcastically notes “You might want to consider going.” It kicks off this weekend in New York but over the next 3 months will be hitting Atlanta, Vail, Seattle, Boston, DC, San Francisco, Miami, Chicago, and Los Angeles.
